Resume Hours Reflection

March 6, 2018

It continues to be a joy to be able to help individuals with their resumes one-on-one. Seriously! I have been providing this service on a regular schedule since July of last year and have been happy to meet so many of my Lawrence neighbors because of it!

Many of these clients and neighbors are primarily Spanish-speaking and their faces light up when they see this white girl (me ) walking the talk in Spanish right along with them. Everyone comes in with such great hearts and enthusiasm, and everyone leaves with completed resumes.

Lately, we've had many seniors referred to us that are looking to figure out the next step in life. Each session, I'm blown away by their accomplishments. A few weeks ago, I actually had the chance to work with the founder of a Blind Worker's Union in DR! Another was a world traveler due to her schooling!

There's been clients with all sorts of professional degrees and certifications from their home countries, mostly from the Dominican Republic thus far, and it's been a shame that there isn't a better way for them to have their professions recognized in the US. Today, there was a lawyer, other times there have been dentists, teachers, doctors and more, and it saddens me when this country promises them a better life yet we are sending them back to square one when they're just trying to get by, they have a family to provide for or they should be just about ready to retire.

Of course, I don't have all the answers right  now, but in line with my work towards economic justice and workers' rights, I'd really like to work with Northern Essex Community College and others to better their chances of living a fulfilling life in the States. The US is a mosaic of indigenous people and immigrants and no one should have to invest so much time and money into their profession only to be told that it doesn't matter here. Seniors especially shouldn't be working minimum wage when they're supposed to be on the track for retirement. They put in their time already. Let's do better to welcome those who's life path has led them to live here.

If you believe in the work that we're doing and appreciate our efforts, I invite you to make a monetary donation to help cover the costs of our programs, like the Resume Hours that we are offering free to our job-seeking clients. Thank you!
