Q: What kind of clothes do you take?
A: Primarily, we accept men's and women's professional clothing. At the minimum, basic pieces that one can incorporate into their outfit for the work week.
Q: Do they have to be dry cleaned before they're donated?
A: No. Although it is nice to have them dry cleaned, as long as they are clean and washed prior arrival, it is ok to wash them at home as you would usually.
We won't refuse them if they are dry cleaned though ;)
Q: Do they have to be dropped off a certain way?
A: You are welcome to drop off your donations in any way that works best for you - on hangers, in plastic bags or in paper bags. We have steamers and irons in-house - so no worries.
We love hangers that have the clips built in or that open up and clamp down for pants and skirts.
We recycle plastic hangers and upcycle wire + wooden hangers.
Also, we love to reuse paper shopping bags!
Q: How are the clothes used?
A: First and foremost, the clothes are presented to our clients as options for their job interviews. Clients are allowed to keep the clothes that are given to them.
We do have a thrift store as one of our fundraising sources. Anyone is welcome shop our thrift store during our open hours and the funds will go right back into our programs.
Clothes that are too casual to send our clients out on interview with get put towards our community clothing swaps. The Swap, as we call it, is another fundraising source for us.
Slightly damaged clothes are used for different projects and are reused/recycled in different ways.
Q: How does one receive clothing?
A: There are two ways:
Q: Will I receive a donation receipt for my taxes?
A: Yes! We have printed copies on site or you may download a receipt here.
Q: What happens to clothes that don't get used?
A: There is hardly such a thing at Progress! We get donations all the time, so we do have to keep things moving in order to keep up! If it's been on our racks for too long (ie: it hasn't been chosen by our clients or our shoppers for long periods of time) it first gets put into The Swap. If there are leftovers from The Swap, the pieces get donated to local partners, and if there are still leftovers, the pieces get reused/recycled for other projects.
In the end, NOTHING GOES TO WASTE! We will never throw our clothes in the trash (actually horrific for the environment) and once you have one of our pieces, it's your job to find a way to do the same!
